The company is currently releasing its 2.0 models, which are the successors to the 1.5 models from last year. Right now, the company is testing models like Gemini 2.0 Experimental and Gemini 2.0 Thinking. So, you can expect 2025 to be packed with Gemini releases.
Google releases Gemini 2.0 Flash for the app
Free users usually get more modest models while paying customers have access to the more powerful ones. Last year, Google gave its free users Gemini 1.5 Flash, so we can see that free users will likely get the โFlashโ variants going forward.
Gemini 2.0 Flash prioritizes speed, so youโll use it if you want quicker responses. Since theyโre quicker, they may not be as in-depth or as accurate as a response from a reasoning model. These are models that will take a little extra time to โthinkโ about their response. Still, Gemini 2.0 Flash is an across-the-board improvement over version 1.5 Flash.
Itโs available for users to use in the app starting today. If you still want to use Gemini 1.5 Flash and 1.5 Pro, Google mentioned that it will be available for the next couple of weeks. Thatโs a pretty vague timeline, to be honest.

Along with the news of Gemini 2.0 Flash, Google also shared some other updates. If youโre a Gemini Advanced user, youโll still have access to the 1 million-token version of the model for uploaded files with up to 1,500 pages. Youโll also have access to features like Deep Research and Gems.
Rounding out the changes, Google also announced that it updated its image generation platform to the latest version of Imagen 3. Lauded as a โstate-of-the-art modelโ by Google, it will produce much more realistic images.
